This paper reports 61 cases with renal injuries, the majority of which were schoolchildren. There was a 2:1 male to female ratio. Most injuries were of closed variety and produced by a fall. Twelve cases were associated injuries of other structures or organs. Symptoms and signs included macroscopic or microscopic hematuria, tenderness and rigity of the lumbar region. An excretory urogram of 11 cases showed distortion of the calyces and excreting defects and extravasation of the contrast medium through the kidney. Forty-nine cases were treated by conservative methods. Twelve required operation. All the patients have recovered. The authors emphasize when patients who are not in shock are admitted, an intravenous urogram should be obtained as early as possible. If the symptoms tend to aggravate progressively and the excretory urogram do not give enough information, the renal angiography and renal scans should be done.
