花叶络石为常绿藤蔓植物，可常年开花，适合在果园套种。花叶络石的茎叶茂盛，夏季能使地表温度降低3～7℃，防止表层果树根系遭受烈日暴晒；秋冬季可提高地表温度3℃，使降温速度变缓，延长吸收根的生长期，增加树体营养的积累，提高果品产量和品质。由于种植花叶络石改善了果树的生长环境和营养条件，从而使果树抗病力增强，特别是对果树腐烂病有明显的抑制作用，同时有利于蚜虫、红蜘蛛等害虫的天敌生存和繁育，使虫害发生率明显下降。
