Several disease-resistant signal substances, such as abscisic acid (ABA), hydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2), nitric oxide (NO), jasmonie acid (JA) and ethylene (ETH), in the leaves of 3 grape cultivars, 'Syrah', 'Char-donnay' and 'Cabernet Sauvignon', with different resistance to Plasmopara viticola, were studied in order to detect the signal transduction mechanisms. The results showed that H_2O_2 and NO were involved in the disease response, and 'Syrah' showed strong resistance! JA and ABA were involved in the disease response of the suscep-tible variety 'Cabernet Sauvignon'. Moreover, the level of ETH had no signifieant difference among the 3 culti-vars used. It was presumed that H_2O_2, NO, JA and ABA were involved in resistance against the downy mildew disease, but there were significantly different reactions among the three cultivars employed.
