High-capacity impact loads can produce adverse effects on the safe operation of generators at nearby power plants. EMTP was selected as the simulation tool, and its feasibility on non-linear modeling of impact loads and electromagnetic transient simulation for large power system was firstly analyzed. From the aspect of effects of impact loads on generators, particularly, on transient shaft torsional torques, indices for evaluating the effects were discussed in detail, and guidelines for evaluating shaft torsional oscillation, with respect to Fatigue Life Expenditure (FLE) and electromagnetic power were put forward. Finally, practicability and validity of the proposed guidelines was verified by the way of simulation and analysis based on an actual power system.
