Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have been employed for municipal and industrial wastewater treatments on account of its efficient and excellent effluent quality,but the membrane fouling is main obstacle for wider application of MBRs.The effect of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on membrane fouling was introduced,and the measures of improving the activated sludge characteristics,including the addition of additives,optimization of operating parameters and cultivation of aerobic granular sludge were summarized.The approach of adding a natural polymer coagulant for improving the sludge characteristics was pointed out.
