This paper presents characteristics and disposal technique of high level radioactive wastes (HLW), and reviews a progress in the study on the chemical behavior of Am, a transuranic element possing long-term potential risk to the environment, under the geological repository. The effect of the basic chemical reactions of Am possibly happening in groundwater, including solubility, complexation, and colloidal generation, on the migration are discussed. Some proposals for further work in China are also suggested.
