Microbial fuel cell (MFC) based on mixed bacteria is an electrogenic apparatus in which a variety of microorganisms from the environment directly attach to the anode. Compared with MFC based on pure bacteria, mixed MFC based on bacteria has shorter start time, lower cost, stronger resistance to environmental shock and higher stability. The recent research status of MFC based on mixed bacteria is introduced, including types of electrogenic microorganisms, electron transfer mechanisms, main factors affecting the electricity generation and existing problems. Furthermore, the future research emphasis and direction of MFC based on mixed bacteria is presented.
