Transparent magnesium aluminate spinel(MgAl2O4 ) ceramics have been considered as an important optical material due to their good mechanical properties and excellent transparency from visible light to IR wavelength range. The research progress in the transparent MgAl2O4 ceramics fabricated by spark plasma sintering(SPS) is summarized,and the effect of temperature and pressure on the final optical properties is mainly introduced. It is shown that the hearting rate and pre-loaded pressure of SPS processing have a great impact on the final optical properties in spinel ceramic. Some solving measures are presented in view of the existing problems. The research and application tendency in future are also prospected,to lay a foundation for further study.
