Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder threatening to global public health. Stem cells have capabilities of both self-renewal and muhilineage differentiation. Cell replacement therapy via islet cells derived from adult and embryonic stem cells may be a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of diabe-tes. Stem cells could be spontaneous or induced differentiation into insulin-producing cells in vitro. Subse-quent transplantation of these cells to streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice could correct their glycemia, which brings us the hope for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in future.
