The collagen family of extracellular matrix proteins plays a fundamental role in the evolution of multicellular organism. In tissues, cells are anchored to collagenous structures. The interaction between cells and collagen can be indirect and mediated by matrix glycoproteins. Cells also express receptors, which directly bind to the triple helical domains of collagens. In addition, increasing evidence indicates that receptors bind to the specific motifs of collagens.
