Poly(adipic anhydride)(PAA) was synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization of adipic anhydride(AA) initiated by allylmagnesium chloride in solution and in bulk. The effects of various factors, such as amount of the initiator, reaction time and temperature, and polarity of solvent, on the polymerization were investigated. The results indicate that allylmagnesium chloride is effective for the ring opening polymerization of AA. The polymers were characterized by IR, 1H NMR and DSC. The end group analysis suggests that the AA polymerization might proceed through the "coordination-insertion" mechanism based on the acyl-oxygen cleavage of the AA ring.
