Thermal stability and carbon yield of phenolic resin can be greatly increased by introducing boron compounds. The effects of inorganic and organic boron compounds on the phenolic resin are reviewed, the advantages and disadvantages of boron compounds modified phenolic resin are analyzed. It is pointed out emphatically that hyperbranched polyborate is a novel effective modifier for improving the thermal stability, toughness and processability of phenolic resin.
