The original definition of the neglected tropical diseases (NTD) ,the global distribution, the current status of prevention and control, and the opportunities and challenges were reviewed in this paper. A new WHO department of NTD and a WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) on NTD have been established. In addition, a new collaborative organization named Global Network for the Neglected Tropical Dis-eases was formalized in U. S. A and the first open-access journal of PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases was is-sued. Recently, U. S. President Bush announced new global initiatives to combat neglected tropical diseases,that was warmly welcomed by WHO Director General. As a result,growing attention has been paid on the neg-lected tropical diseases.
