东晋以来，爨氏在南中的统治区域相对稳定，并随内地王朝势力的扩大而收缩、随王朝势力的缩小而扩大。爨氏通过奉王朝正朔，获得了统治的正统性；同时，通过保持向王朝的朝贡及统合夷汉部曲，维护了其与中央、地方关系的互动。在爨氏称霸时期，西爨境内保持着许多小区域的政权，没有进到集权统治，只是奉爨氏大长为盟主。从这个意义上讲，整个爨区依然是“君长以什数”，只是“爨”最大而已。
동진이래，찬씨재남중적통치구역상대은정，병수내지왕조세력적확대이수축、수왕조세력적축소이확대。찬씨통과봉왕조정삭，획득료통치적정통성；동시，통과보지향왕조적조공급통합이한부곡，유호료기여중앙、지방관계적호동。재찬씨칭패시기，서찬경내보지착허다소구역적정권，몰유진도집권통치，지시봉찬씨대장위맹주。종저개의의상강，정개찬구의연시“군장이십수”，지시“찬”최대이이。
Cuanshi＇s governing area in Nanzhong region has been relatively stable since Dong Jin dynasty, which expands and shrinks with the dynasty power in inland inversely. Cuanshi obtains official governing power by admitting dynasty＇s power and it maintains interaction with central and region power by paying tribute to the dynasty and uniting Han and minority nationality. In Cuanshi hegemony period, there are many small areas which are not controlled by central government in XiCuan region. The local leaders admit Cuanshi as alliance leader. Therefore, the whole Cuan region still has many leaders, but Cuanshi is only the alliance leader from this sense.
