Contextualization cue is an important theory advanced by John Gumperz,the founder of interactional sociolinguistics,in studying the rules of understanding discourse,which is of great importance to interpreting the process and mechanism of conversational inference and revealing the influence of social and cultural background on verbal communications.This theory makes it possible to correlate communication rules with characteristics of language style as well as verbal activity types.To apply this theory into the study of teaching Chinese to foreign students is of significance to revealing the Chinese understanding mechanism and conversation strategies,and helping students improve their Chinese comprehension and communication abilities.
