从传统动物园向现代动物园转变已经成为我国动物园建设的重要命题，既是中国经济社会发展的必然要求，也为中国动物园的发展带来了新的机遇和挑战。传统动物园的主要特征是以动物为取乐的对象，而现代动物园则把自然保护和保护教育作为重要使命。现代动物园的特征有：动物展示方式追求自然和生态化，展示动物栖息地的主要特征；注重动物福利从而体现对生命的尊重；开展科学研究为动物园及野外动物保护提供技术支持；动物园在规划、建设、运营中应成为环境保护的先行者。通过这些，使公众感受到保护自然的重要性，自觉充当自然保护和教育者的角色。广州动物园不忘社会职责，在探索动物园现代转型中初步实现了社会效益、生态效益和经济效益的同步增长。
