Electromyographic activity of the colon was studied in 41 patients suffering from aganglionic megacolon and in 29 normal infants and children by an intraluminal electrode.Graphs obtained in the control children showed a basic electrical rhythm with bursts of high frequency spikes, but the recording in Hirschsprung's disease showed only a basic electrical rhythm without high frequency potentials when the electrode is placed in the aganglionic zone.On the basis of the disappearance of the bursts of high frequency spikes, the diagnostic rate of Hirschsprung's disease by anorectal eletromyography(AEMG) was 78.1%.Based on pathological changes showed by barium enema, the accuracy of electromyography,in revealing the extent of the 1esion was 84%.These findings suggest that electromyography can be very helpful in the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease.
