在川渝至贵州之间，自古存在一条盐油古道。它以乌江航运为主，水陆并进，自川境涪陵（今属重庆）起运川盐，溯乌江经彭水、龚滩、沿河、新滩、潮砥，抵达思南、石阡，辐射铜仁、湘西等地，下载桐油等土特产品水运出黔。这条盐油古道涵盖川、渝、黔、湘，对贵州土家族地区经济文化发展，产生了深远影响，堪与滇藏之间的荼马古道媲美。
재천투지귀주지간，자고존재일조염유고도。타이오강항운위주，수륙병진，자천경부릉（금속중경）기운천염，소오강경팽수、공탄、연하、신탄、조지，저체사남、석천，복사동인、상서등지，하재동유등토특산품수운출검。저조염유고도함개천、투、검、상，대귀주토가족지구경제문화발전，산생료심원영향，감여전장지간적도마고도비미。
Throughout history, there has been an ancient salt-oil channel between Sichuan （including Chongqing） and Guizhou. This channel, whose trunk is Wujiang shipping, owns both water and land transportation. It starts from Fuling （now belongs to Chongqing） to ship the salt in Sichuan Province, then goes upstream along Wujiang, passes by Pengshui, Gongtan, Yanhe, Xintan, and Chaodi, and reaches Sinan, Shiqian, covering Tongren, Western Hunan and other places, and finally loads the Tung oil and other native products out of Guizhou through water transportation at the downstream. This channel, which covers Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Hunan, has profound influence on the economic and cultural development of Tujia areas in Guizhou, comparable to the Tea-horse Ancient Road between Yunnan and Tibet.
