地名就是地理方位的标志或象征,不仅具有指示和辨认地点和方位的作用,同时也具有特定的历史文化内涵。内蒙古地区的蒙语地名是蒙古民族在漫长的历史发展过程中形成的,有着浓厚蒙古民族的文化特征。翻译内蒙古蒙语地名时,一定要根据蒙古民族的语言与文化特点,应更多采用蒙古语语音转写的汉语拼音字母形式,以便更好地保留本民族的文化特色,更大程度地提高国际社会的接收效果。

Geographical Names, the mark and symbol of geographical direction, is characterized by its role not only in the indication and recognition of the place and direction, hut also in its unique cultural and historical connotation. The Mongolian geographical names in Inner Mongolia, with the unique cultural feature of Mongo- lian nationality, have been taken shape through a long historical development. Therefore the translation of Mon- golian geographical names should be based on the characteristics of Mongolian language and culture, and more writing form of Chinese phonetic alphabet directly transferred from the Mongolian language sound should be used to preserve the characteristics of Mongolian language and culture,, additionally, to promote recipient＇ s effect of foreign countries in a larger scale.
