胡同是一个来自蒙古语的借词,这似乎已是目前学界的共识。不过对于胡同所对应的究竟是哪个蒙古词,则众说纷纭。本文从＂胡同＂的早期文例出发提出一种新解,即：胡同原先在蒙古语中应该有＂两边高中间低之狭长地带＂的意思;并从元明两代城市规划及市民居住建筑的不同分析了明代胡同数量激增的原因。

Hutong is a loanword from Mongolian,and this sense had already come to an agreement in the academic circle.But there are some different ideas on the original meaning of this word.The paper brings up a new sense,that Hutong means a U -shaped narrow belt in Mongolian.Linking up with the different urban construction in Yuan and Ming dynasty,the papes explains the reason why the amount of Hutong increased rapidly in Ming dynasty.
