We report a rational synthesis of self-assembly metallic nickel spheres by a convenient hydrothermal method, and demonstrate a novel, feasible, and large-scale synthesis of metallic nickel microstructures. The presence of diacetyldioxime was found to play an important role in the formation of spheral structure. The as-synthesized Ni spheres show remarkably enhanced coercivity. Since the formation of a relatively stable complex is universal for various transition metals, we believe such a rational low-temperature synthetic route may be versatile and can be adapted for the fabrication of other transition metals or their alloys.
