Novel has now become an all too natural form of modern literature, and yet what's worth noting in The Theory of the Novel, authored by the founder of Western Marxism, Georg Lukacs, is its unique perspective of the nature of novel form seen from historical dimension. This book is renowned for its soul-stirring writing style and unique historical insight. Lukacs demonstrates the inevitability of the novel form as a product of the totality-deprived modern capitalist society. He believes that the common problem of modern novel lies in its fragmentation of inwardness and monologue style isolated from society in both historical and social dimension. This paper attempts to reiterates the key points demonstrated in The Theory of the Novel and, through Baktin's theory of polyphony, points out how the works by Dostoevsky is believed by Lukacs to be uniquely distinguished from other novels that promises a new dimension of novel writing.
