天南星为天南星科植物天南星、异叶天南星、东北南星的块茎, <神农本草经>只载虎掌,列为下品,而无天南星之名;而<本草纲目>把天南星并在虎掌之下,<植物名实图考>也以虎掌作为天南星;据唐代<本草拾遗>记栽天南星与虎掌并非同一样药物,可见当时天南星的采用情况相当混乱.历版<中国药典>均收载天南星、异叶天南星和东北天南星,而没有收载虎掌.但在药材行业经营一直有使用虎掌,商品规格习惯将<中国药典>收载品统称为天南星,而虎掌则称为虎掌南星.此外,尚有同科其他多种植物的块茎在不同地区作天南星使用.

As plant tubers of Araceae, Atisaema heterophyllum or Amurenso, Rhizoma Arisaematis was not recorded in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Shen-nong's Classic of Meteria Medica) but Pinellia pedatisecta as inferior; but the Compendium of Materia Medica recorded the Araceae under the name of Pinellia pedatisecta, Zhi Wu Ming Shi Tu Koo (An Illustrated Book of Plants) also recorded Pinellia pedatisecta as Rhizoma Arisaematis. According to Supplement to Medica written in Tang Dynasty, Rhizoma Arisaema was not the same as Pineilia pedatisecta. All these expressed a very chaotic adoption of Rhizoma Arisaema tis at that time. Every edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia contains all Araceae, Arisaeraa heterophyllum and Arisaema, but not Pinellia pedatisecta. However, the trade in medicinal herbs has been in charge of Pmellia pedatisecta, and the specifications of goods are used to name Rhizoma Arisaematis collected in Chinese Pharmacopoeia, but Pinellia pedatisecta named as Pinellia pedatisecta Schott. In addition, there are a variety of other tubers of the same family Araceae plants used as Rhizoma Arisaematis in different regions.
