The stiffness and hydrophobicity of teteraehoxysilane(TEOS)-based silica aerogels were characterized.The 2-step TEOS-based alcogels were made from TEOS,ethanol(EtOH),water(H2O),hydrochloric acid(HCI)and ammonia(NH4OH)in the total molar ratio of 1:(2~10):5:9.7×10-4:(1.2 ×10-3~2.2 ×10-3).We disclosed how the strength and stiffness of a wet gel can be improved by aging in a mixed solution of water/ethanol(10 vol%)at 40℃ for 24 h and how this influence the aerogels'properties.The linear shrinkage during supercritical drying was reduced from 12.5%to 2.3%by aging the water/ethanol washed gel in TEOS/ethanol and HDMSA/ethanol solution,respectively.
