In the first part of the article, an idealized computer aided development process for the entire powertrain of a vehicle is presented. It is shown how state-of-the-art simulation techniques can contribute to a continuous development process, which is based upon offline simulation using hardware in the loop,the utilization of the possibilities to link electronic transmission and engine control units.Then there will be a report of the application and development of real-time simulation models, such as engine models and transmission models, which are essential modules for the development process mentioned above.Based upon the described development methodology, applications that have already been implemented and further possible applications of this holistic development process are covered.
