白马人以白雄鸡尾羽为帽饰之行为属民间习俗。自然，其解释权在民间。而白马山寨现存的关于白鸡翎帽饰由来的各种口传文本正是对这一问题的民间话语诠释，其折射出白鸡翎帽饰的由来及其与战争的内在关联。透过民间话语诠释以及白鸡翎帽饰的表层，实际上白鸡翎帽饰也负载着信念（致祥辟邪的吉物、英雄和救命恩人之深层意象）与社会功能（社会角色标识、族徽和审美）的双重使命。

It is a folk custom for the Baima Tibetan group to decorate their hats with white rooster feathers. Its interpretation should be done by the folk. The existing oral legends in Baima Tibetan village are just the folk interpretation for such hat decorations, reflecting the intrinsic relationship between the origin of decorations and wars. The hat decoration actually plays the dual roles of folk beliefs （the iamges of mascots, heros and saviours） and social functions （ social role identification, clan emblems and aesthetic understanding）.
