中国的音乐理论早在周代礼乐文化形成之时就已建立,但传统的音乐理论注重音乐的社会性,往往忽视了个体性.魏晋时期的玄学兴起为新的理论提供了有利的环境,嵇康就在这个背景之下论述了音乐与个人的关系,其音乐美学的新观点体现了那个时期人的觉醒的现实,也从一个则面说明了"文的自觉"的时代背景.

China's music theory was established as early as the the time of formation of etiquette and music culture in Zhou Dynasty. However, the traditional music theory focused on the sociality of the music and more often than not it overlooked its personal nature. The rise of metaphysics between Wei and Jin period provided a favorable environment for the new theory. It was under this circumstance that Ji Kang discussed the relation between music and man. His new theory on Music Aesthetics represented the reality of the awakening of the people at that time and from one side reflected the historical background of the "Consciousness of Art".
