This paper presents a low power, configurable and low cost MPEG-1/2 Layer I/II/III audio decoder. The decoder consists of a software core and a hardware core and has two operation modes, "high quality" mode and "power saving" mode. In the "high quality" mode, the decoder is a full compliance MPEG audio decoder. In the "power saving" mode, a cut-off sub-band synthesis filter and downsampling architecture is proposed. Using the new architecture, the power consumption of the decoder is decreased further more.
