美国小说家纳撒尼尔·霍桑的杰作《红字》一直被认为是美国文学史上的经典作品之一,自其问世以来便激起世界文坛众多学者的极大研究兴趣.本文从生态批评角度来解读《红字》这部小说.文章首先简述了生态批评的一些背景知识,包括其定义、发展及基本诉求；其次通过分析小说中的主要人物,揭示出霍桑对极端唯科学主义的严厉批判、对人类无止境的贪欲的谴责以及对人与自然和谐共生的愿景,综合体现了霍桑对其笔下主人公们甚至对整个非人类世界的崇高人文关怀.

The Scarlet Letter,written by Nathaniel Hawthorne,is Widely hailed as a masterpiece in the history of American literature and it has aroused the research interests of numerous scholars in the literary world since its coming into being.This paper attempts to interpret the novel from the perspective of eco-criticism to unveil the spirit of humanism in the novel.The paper first gives a brief introduction of eco-criticism,including the definition and historical development of ecocriticism and the essential aims pursued by eco-critics at large.Then,by analyzing the major protagonists in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter,the paper reveals Hawthorne's harsh criticism of extreme scientism (typically held by Roger Chillingworth),his condemnation over human being's unbridled desires,and his lofty ideal for harmony between man and nature,all of which reflect Hawthorne's humanistic care for the protagonists in his novel and even for the entire nonhuman world.
