Niobic acid was first used as the catalyst for the synthesis of n-octyl maleate. The optimum conditions were as follows: the molar ratio of n-octyl alcohol to maleic anhydride was 3.0∶1,the reaction time of reflux was 1h, the amount of catalyst was 5g per mole of maleic anhydride. The conversion of maleic anhydride was 99.3%, and the selectivity reached 85.6%.The catalyst can be used for times without any treatments, and has no pollution to environ-ment. In comparison with some other common catalysts, the niobic acid had obvious advantages.
