Scrap tires were investigated as additives to concrete in this study. A short review on the methods of the modification the surface of rubber is conducted. Some surface modification methods of rubber particles were conducted in this work. The intermolecular interaction forces between rubber particles and cement hydration products (C-S-H) may affect the mechanical strength of rubberized concrete, the measurement of these forces is important. Therefore, in this work a colloid probe of C-S-H was prepared to directly meas-ure the intermolecular interaction forces by using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results showed that the rubber par-ticles treated with suitable surface modification gave a more hydrophilic property than that of as-received rubber particles. In addition, the intermolecular interaction forces increased with modification of the surface of rubber particles. The compressive strengths also in-creased significantly for rubber particles treated with surface modification of the rubber.
