Two-dimensional (2-D) modeling and simulation were conducted for air intake and compression in an internal combustion (I.C.) engine. The 2-D general orthogonal coordinate was employed to account for the complex geometry of the I.C. engine. The governing equations were solved using the SIMPLEC algorithm. Four turbulence models, the standard κ-ε model, Realizable k-ε model, the Reynolds stress model and the Subgrid-scale model were used, and the predicted results were analyzed. The calculated flow fields were compared with the experimental measurements. Some interesting flow patterns in the engine were predicted using the present model.
