The design scheme of a storey-adding structure spanning existing building with frame using friction energy-dissipation braces dissipated energy for seismic intensity zone 8 is briefly outlined. The seismic structure design parameters and procedures of the friction energy -dissipated-brace are illustrated. The analysis method for earthquake responses together with the analysis results is presented. The results indicate that the friction energy-dissipation devices effectively control displacement response. Moreover, the deformation of the structure can satisfy the requirements of the seismic cede under the horizontal motions of frequently or occasionally earthquakes. Especially, it is found that shear forces in frame column and in old building are significantly decreased, which makes optimal structural design possible.
