Hagiography is one of the major literary forms in Mediaeval Europe and enjoys a long history. It is, however, long neglected by historians and literary critics. This genre is characterized as highly conventionalized in strict compliance with the tradition. In addition, the explicit purposes of commemoration, conversion, and exemplarity enable this genre to become an essential tool for the Christian community.
