As the first systematic philosophic works in Chinese history,To Te Ching contains wise words about the operation of the universe,the truth of life and the way of society.James Legge has played a vital role in helping this great writing to be known to the world.Through constructing translation practice theory on the basis of speech act theory,this paper explores the process of the English translation of To Te Ching by James Legge and uncovers its social,cultural and political influences.
