The history, principles and algorithms of optimal location of water quality monitoring sites in water distribution system are introduced. The difference in optimal location between two types of the monitoring sites is analyzed. The research and practice in optimal location of water quality monitoring sites in municipal water distribution system at home and abroad are reviewed. Aimed at the increasingly serious problem of drinking water safety, the research on optimal location of water quality monitoring sites for intrusion pollution events should be performed to increase drinking water safety.
