Ischemic postconditioning (I-postC) is defined as a procedure of rapid intermittent periods of reperfusion and ischemia in the early phase of reperfusion after long ischemia. I-postC is the endogenous protective mechanism capable of protecting the myocardium from myocardial necrosis, dysfunction, and vicious ventricular arrhythmia induced by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Research has been done on its mechanism, signaling pathways, and potential clinical applications. This review will cover the characteristics, cardioprotective effects, molecular mechanism, and potential applications of I-postC.
