Objective To reduce rate of birth defects in migrant pregnant women. Methods Two communities were selected, 516 mi-grant pregnant women in 1 community served as control group and were given conventional prenatal management and health educa-tion, and 504 pregnant women in the other community were assigned as observation group and adopted intensive prenatal educa-tion, including dispensing sheets in community, factory and hospital, broadcasting knowledge about prevention of birth defects in VCD and TV, holding lectures etc, and prenatal examination and management was performed in groups with 20-30 pregnancies. Results Awareness rates of factors influencing birth defects (except items of environment and malnutrition) in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group, and the rate of birth defects in the observation group was significantly lower(P,(0.01 for all). Conclusion Intensive prenatal edueation can improve compliance with prenatal examination in migrant preg-nancies, improve their awareness of prenatal care, and reduce the rate of birth defects.
