Backgrounded by the new requirements placed on China's higher education for talents in a new era of social progress, this paper briefly reviews the history of college English coursebook development, and analyzes its leading principles of "student-centeredness" and "ability-orientation." The paper indicates that the newly published coursebook Experiencing English Viewing, Listening and Speaking is a valuable attempt to integrate the above-mentioned forward-looking principles and the task-based language teaching approach into the core objectives of college English teaching, namely, the enhancement of students' ability to use English freely, to learn autonomously, and to think independently. The paper also elaborates on the structure of the coursebook and its features in task design.
