自组织是指系统在内部组织力的作用下，各要素或成分相互作用的自创生、自发展的过程及其构型。城市自组织是指在没有外部组织力的特定作用下，城市系统内部各要素由于内部组织力的作用各尽其责而又相互协调地自动形成有序的城市构型的过程，它包括形成过程和有序的城市构型。它除具有开放性、非线性、非平衡性、自下而上性以及自创生性等主要特性之外，还具有临界性、多样性、复杂性、层次性等性质。

Self-organization is a self-creation and self-development of process and configuration in which each element or component of the system interact under the action of the system internal organization forces, without specific role of external organization strength. Urban self-organization i. e. the abbreviation of self-organization of developing city, refers to every internal factors of the urban system due to internal organization of forces take responsibility and coordination automatic forming an orderly process of urban configurations, without specific function of the exterior organi-zation strength, it includes forming process and orderly urban configurations. It have some main characteristics such as the openness, non-linear, the non-- balance, bottom-up and self-- created, still have criticality, diversity and complexity, level-o- riented character and so on.
