The dimeric surfactants are a novel class of surfactants which have two amphiphiles connected with a spacer.This linking leads to changes in the physical and chemical properties as compared with those of the conventional single-chain surfactants.For example,the ionic dimeric surfactants are about 3 orders of magnitude more efficient in reducing surface tension(C20) and somewhat more than 2 orders of magnitude more efficient in forming micelle(CMC) than conventional ionic surfactants.These properties suggest that dimeric surfactants may be candidates for the next generation of surfactants.In this article we mention the interfacial properties at the air/water interface and the characteristics of micelle and summarize the synthesis and several potential applications in industrial and household fields.
