Harmonic quality of power network has increasingly deteriorated. The use of active filtering techniques, which is effective for harmonic suppression, has become more attractive. One of the key points for proper implementation of an APF is to use a reliable method for current/voltage reference generation. Harmonic detection methods are divided into two categories, based on power definition and digital signal process theories. The power definition theories include Fryze power definition, instantaneous reactive power, synchronous rotating coordinate system, voltage-controlled DC, etc. The digital signal process theories include Fourier transform, generalized integrator, Prony/Kalma estimation, wavelet/S trans-form, neural network/adaptive filtering, etc. This article gives a survey of the commonly used methods for harmonic detec-tion in active power filters, and presents their advantages, disadvantages and application scope respectively.
