孝道曾被视作天经地义.然而到了近代,特别是甲午战后,孝道开始受到人们的非议.非孝者并非反对子女对父母的敬爱,而是认为传统孝道主恩,使子女丧失独立人格;孝道造成了中国家族本位,不利于培养公民的国家意识;孝道中的亲亲原则,不利于建立法治国家;孝道中的移忠作孝,成为帝王专制主义的基础.他们主张父母子女的关系应该建立在爱与平等的基础上,父慈子孝应该是对应的.而拥孝者则认为孝道是道德的本源与起点,孝道的根本精神在于珍重生命,激发人们爱与感恩的情感.父慈子孝是道德义务,而非对应的权利.正因如此,就不应该因为传统孝道中的一些偏颇,或被帝王利用,就根本否定孝道.

In the history of China, filial piety was once regarded perfectly justified. But in modern times ,especially after the Jiawu Sino-Japanese War, filial piety began to be censured. People who were against filial piety did not oppose children' s respect and love for their parents. They thought that traditional filial piety worshiped graciousness, which caused children's loss of independent personality; that filial piety required people to put the interest of family in the first place, which was not beneficial to the development of citizens' national consciousness; that the principle of cherishing one' s own relatives did no good to the establishment of a country under the rule of law; and that the idea of the monarch' s interest being above all the others laid the foundation of autocracy. People in favour of non-filial piety advocated that love and equality should be the basis of the relationships between parents and children. What' s more, they thought that proper family relationship should be a mutual-respecting one. On the other hand,people in favour of filial piety thought that being filial was the moral source. The basic spirit of filial piety lied in treasuring life and stimulating love and gratitude. The proper relationships were moral duty ,but not corresponding right. Therefore, people should not show a completely negative attitude towards filial piety, just because of some of its biased thoughts and its once being used by monarchs.
