PLA General Hospital Electrospinal instrumentation has been used in the treatment of 3 cases (2 males and 1 female, aged between 10-12) of idiopathic scoliosis in our hospital since 1984.Thansmitter Model 3103 manufactured by Meditronic Co.,U.S.,was used.Three lectrodes were embedded in the paraspinal muscles meticulously so as not to injure the spinal cord and nerve roots. The stimulation began 3 days after the implantation and was given 2-3 times a day, each lasting 20-30 minutes. The stimulation could produce a strong tetanic ontraction.Idiopathic seoliosis with a main curve less than 30 is one of the indications. The 3 cases in our series all showed improvement on the follow-ups.This procedure has the advantages of simplicity compared with other treatments and an active, normal life which the patient can enjoy either before or after the treatment.
