As the the portal crane is working in the port, the collision of the elephant nose beam would endanger the safety and efficiency of the whole machine. This paper introduces a collision avoidance protection device based on the supersonic senser distance measuring system. The distance between two elephant nose beams could be measured as the two portal cranes span and change range. Once the safety limit is reached, the sound and light alarm would be sent out, so as to warn the driver. Once the extreme distance is reached, the sound and light alarm would be send to the electric control system and make the portal crane stop at once.
