吸食鸦片现象在明代中后期逐渐在统治阶级上层社会流行,近代社会吸食鸦片成风与鸦片在短时间内能提高人的性功能上有一定的因素.鸦片在近代中国社会的危害达到了惊人的地步,研究这一现象的学者通常把鸦片在中国的危害归结为西方列强的侵略,忽视了鸦片危害近代中国社会的国内因素,特别是近代史上大量的国人主动吸食鸦片这一现象的存在不容忽视.

Smoking opium became prevalent among the upper ruling class in the latter half of the Ming Dynasty. It has certain relation with the factor that opium is believed to be able to improve people's sexual function. This belief accounts for the excessive prevalence of opium in modern society. The harm had reached an alarming point. When studying this phenomenon, Scholars usually attributed to the aggression of Western powers against China, and neglect the domestic factors, especially the sex psychological factor, which contributes to most of active opium smoking.
