Understanding textual cohesion and coherence could be helpful in the improvement of reading comprehension.Within the framework of the theory of textual cohesion,the analysis pattern of cohesion is constructed.By analyzing cohesive devices,especially lexical cohesion,in a text in one of text books of college English,a new teaching mode is exploited and constructed.By the new mode,students are guided to identify the clue,uncover the textual pattern and grasp the main idea of the text.The teaching and practice of cohesion could be taken as a regular part of teaching programmes and could also be included in strategy training related to autonomous learning.This is helpful in the improvement of autonomous learning.
