In this paper, the newest development worldwide in defect assessment for pressure vessel and the newest achievements in this field in China were introduced. The trend in development of defect assessment for pressure vessel and the theories used in the as-sessment method were comprehensively analyzed and evaluated. SINTAP method proposed by European Committee and API 579 method proposed by API represent the frontier of structural integrity assessment technology. However, GB/T 19624-2004 is the newest achieve-ment of defect assessment for pressure vessel in our country. In this field, fracture mechanics, intelligent method, fatigue analysis and life prediction are still the important aspects in research and the development.
