Objective To investigate the relationship between the plasma homocysteine level(Hcy)and type 2 diabetic (T2DM) gastrointestinal neuropathy, and to find the risk factors for gastrointestinal neuropathy. Methods The study subjects included three groups: control groups(NC),T2DM without gastrointestinal neuropathy (Non-DGN) and diabetic gastrointestinal neuropathy group (DGN). The fasting plasma Hcy concentration and electrogastrogram were determined. Results Plasma levels of Hcy were higher in total diabetes groups than in control group (P<0.05). The Hcy level was higher in DGN group than in non-DGN group, but there was no significant difference(P>0.05). The Spearman correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis showed that age and duration were independent risk factors for diabetic gastrointestinal neuropathy. Conclusions High Hcy levels may not be associated with diabetic gastrointestinal neuropathy. Age and duration may be the risk factors for the development of gastrointestinal neuropathy in type 2 diabetic patients.
