通过绵羊线粒体DNA控制区左功能域（5′端序列）PCR-SSCP和序列分析，发现小尾寒羊、乌珠穆沁羊、湖羊、萨福克羊和夏洛来羊以及多赛特公羊与小尾寒羊杂交家系共202只绵羊可归纳为两种类型：突变型和野生型，提示现代绵羊品种在起源上存在两种主要的进化途径。

PCR-SSCP and sequencing of the left domain in ovine mitochondrialcontrol region revealed that all 202 sheep from Small Tail Han sheep, Wuzhumuqin sheep, Hu Yang, Suffol, Sharolai and hybrids between Dorset () and Small Tail Han sheep () can be classified into two types: common type and mutation type, this result suggested that modern domestic sheep originate from two main ancestors.
